DESCRIPTION
The M36/M36E1 is a monocular periscope for the tank commander. It is part of the fire control system in
the M60 series tanks. The M36 periscope is mounted in M119 periscope mount. The M36E1 is mounted
in M119 E 1 mount. A link assembly interconnects the periscope's sighting with the tank machine gun.
The periscope is made up of three main parts:
a. HEAD ASSEMBLY. This part contains an entrance window, a prism (mirror) which is
mechanically connected (by way of link assembly) to the gun elevation drive and a mounting plate by
which the periscope is attached to the periscope mount.
b. BODY ASSEMBLY. This part contains a unity power mirror between entrance and exit windows.
It houses the daylight viewing optical system which is collimated to the body housing to insure
parallelism in the line of sight. It also houses the night viewing optical system which is the third main
part. The M36 night viewing unit is the Infrared Body Assembly. The M36E1 night viewing unit is the
Elbow Assembly.
c. INFRARED BODY ASSEMBLY. This monocular telescope is used for infrared sighting. Within
the assembly is an integral reticle projection system positioned by boresight knobs.
d. ELBOW ASSEMBLY. The elbow or image intensification assembly amplifies available light by
means of an image intensifier tube and power supply, making objects visible without the aid of a
searchlight. Its optical system is like the Infrared Body Assembly.
